Common questions
Old English text explained.
What is "Old English" in this context?
Visually β it's the blackletter / Gothic / Fraktur style of typeface popularised in medieval Europe and still used on certificates, newspaper mastheads (The New York Times, The Daily Telegraph) and tattoos. The actual Old English language (Anglo-Saxon spoken before ~1100) is a separate thing β this tool styles modern English letters to look medieval.
How does this work? Are these real fonts?
They're Unicode characters that look like styled letters β not "fonts" in the install-on-your-system sense. Blackletter "π" is the Unicode "Mathematical Fraktur Capital A" character. Because they're real Unicode codepoints, you can paste them anywhere β Instagram, TikTok, Discord, Twitter β without any custom font support.
Where can I use these?
Anywhere that accepts Unicode: Instagram bios, TikTok display names, Discord nicknames, YouTube comments, Twitter, Telegram, Reddit. Some platforms (LinkedIn, banking sites) reject special characters β try first. They look especially regal in tattoo references and band/clothing logos.
Can I use this for a tattoo?
Many people use Old English text generators as a starting reference for tattoos β it gives a tattoo artist a clear sense of the style. The actual tattoo would be hand-drawn or vectorised by the artist for clean linework, but this tool is great for getting the look right before your appointment.
Why does Instagram show my username differently after I paste?
Instagram's @username field rejects most Unicode "fancy" characters β only basic letters, numbers, dots and underscores are allowed. Use Old English text in your **display name** (above the username) and **bio**, not the @handle.
Will my friends see the same characters?
Yes β Unicode is universal. As long as their device has a system font that supports the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (every modern phone and computer does), they'll see exactly what you copied. Older devices may show empty boxes for runes β that's a font issue on their device, not your text.
What's the difference between Blackletter, Fraktur and Gothic?
"Blackletter" is the umbrella term for medieval European script-style fonts. "Fraktur" is the most common subtype (used in German printing into the 1940s). "Gothic" is sometimes used loosely for blackletter, sometimes specifically for sans-serif fonts (confusing!). All three look medieval. This tool calls them by their Unicode names where applicable.
Do numbers convert too?
Yes. Unicode has no native digits for blackletter, script or italic, so we render numbers in matching bold-styled digits (πβπ) to keep them cohesive with the letters. Every style now carries styled numbers β the only exception is Runic, which stays as 0-9 because Younger Futhark has no numerals.
