📖 What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar — the month in which the Qur'an was first revealed. Adult Muslims fast from Fajr (dawn) to Maghrib (sunset) for the entire month, abstaining from food, drink, and intimate relations during daylight hours.

Why Ramadan matters

  • One of the five pillars of Islam
  • The Qur'an was revealed in this month
  • Includes Laylatul Qadr — the Night of Power
  • Time of heightened worship, charity, reflection
  • Ends with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr

Common practices

  • Suhur — pre-dawn meal before Fajr
  • Iftar — meal that breaks the fast at Maghrib
  • Taraweeh — special nightly prayers
  • Itikaf — spiritual retreat in last 10 days
  • Zakat al-Fitr — charity before Eid prayer

Note: Dates here are calculated estimates. The actual first day of Ramadan is announced after the new crescent moon is sighted in your local region.

Common questions

Ramadan explained.

When does Ramadan start?
Ramadan begins on the first day of the 9th Hijri month, determined by the sighting of the new crescent moon. Calculated estimates can be off by ±1 day depending on local sightings — the dates shown above are based on lunar projections, not confirmed sightings.
Why does Ramadan move earlier each year?
The Islamic calendar is purely lunar, so each Hijri year is about 354 days — roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. As a result, Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year and rotates through all four seasons over a 33-year cycle.
How long does Ramadan last?
Ramadan is 29 or 30 days long, depending on when the next new moon (the start of Shawwal, signalling Eid al-Fitr) is sighted. Most years it's 30 days; sometimes 29.
What is Laylatul Qadr?
Laylatul Qadr (the "Night of Power" or "Night of Decree") is the night the Qur'an began to be revealed. It is "better than a thousand months" of worship (97:3). Believers are encouraged to seek it especially in the odd-numbered nights of the last 10 days of Ramadan — most commonly the 27th night.
When is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr is the first day of Shawwal — the day after the last day of Ramadan, marked by the sighting of the new crescent moon. It begins with the special Eid prayer and is celebrated with family, food, and gifts.
Are these dates 100% accurate?
No — and we don't pretend they are. Islamic months begin with actual moon sighting, which depends on weather and visibility in your region. Treat the dates above as ± 1 day estimates. Consult your local Islamic centre or moon-sighting committee for confirmed dates closer to the time.
