Fasting (sawm) during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Adult Muslims abstain from food, drink, and intimate relations from Fajr (true dawn) until Maghrib (sunset) for the entire month.
Required to fast
- Adult Muslims of sound mind
- Physically able
- Not travelling long distance
- Women not menstruating or postpartum
Exempt — must compensate
- Make up later (qada\'): illness, travel, menstruation, pregnancy
- Pay Fidya: chronic illness, old age — feed one needy person per missed day
- Kaffara: deliberately broken fast — 60 consecutive fasts OR feed 60 people
