Common questions

Zakat explained.

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often.

What exactly is nisab?
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold below which Zakat is not obligatory. It's defined by the Prophet ﷺ as the value of 87.48 grams of gold OR 612.36 grams of silver. Most contemporary scholars recommend using the silver nisab because it gives a lower threshold, meaning more wealth qualifies for Zakat — and more deserving people receive it.
What is hawl?
Hawl is the requirement that your wealth must stay above the nisab for one full Islamic (lunar) year — roughly 354 days. If your wealth dips below nisab during the year, the clock resets when it goes back above.
Should I use gold or silver nisab?
Most scholars today recommend silver nisab — it leads to a lower threshold and thus more Zakat being paid to those in need, which aligns with the spirit of the obligation. Some scholars (particularly Hanafi) accept gold nisab for someone who has no silver. Use what your trusted local scholar advises.
Is jewelry zakatable?
There is scholarly disagreement. The majority view (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) is that gold/silver jewelry above personal-use quantity is zakatable. The Hanafi view is that all gold and silver — including all jewelry — is zakatable. This calculator includes all gold/silver weight you enter.
Is my house or car zakatable?
No. Your primary residence, personal car, furniture, clothing, and tools you use to earn a living are not zakatable. Property held with the intention to sell, however, is zakatable at its market value.
What about money owed to me?
If the debt is likely to be repaid (a friend's loan, an invoice from a reliable client), it is zakatable now. Bad debts (unlikely to be recovered) are not — pay Zakat when received.
Can I deduct my mortgage?
Most contemporary scholars allow you to deduct the next 12 months' worth of mortgage payments — not the full outstanding balance. Use that as the figure for "long-term debts" in this calculator.
Are stocks and crypto zakatable?
Yes. For long-term investments, Zakat is on the current market value. For short-term trading, treat it like business inventory — also at market value. The same applies to cryptocurrency.
Is pension money zakatable?
Only the portion you can actually access. If your pension is locked until retirement, most scholars say no Zakat until you can withdraw. If you can access it now (with penalty), it is zakatable.
When should I pay Zakat?
Once your wealth has stayed above nisab for one full lunar year. Many people pick a fixed Islamic date (e.g. 1st Ramadan) each year to make tracking simpler.
